Camera hardware explained

A camera is more than megapixels.

  1. What it means

A camera is more than megapixels.

  2. What OIS can do

OIS helps steady the lens; it cannot stop a moving subject.

  3. Choose the right lens

Telephoto and ultrawide lenses serve different purposes.

  4. Look beyond the diagram

Our diagram explains hardware; it is not a camera sample or test.

  5. Before you buy

OIS reduces hand shake, but cannot freeze a moving child or pet. Megapixels do not prove photo quality.

A 200 MP camera does not automatically beat a 50 MP one. The sensor size, lens and processing matter more than the pixel count.

What helps most

Optical stabilisation (OIS) on the main camera gives sharper night photos and steadier video. A telephoto lens gives real zoom for distant subjects. An ultrawide fits more into group photos and buildings.

What helps least

2 MP macro and depth cameras are often added to make a phone look like it has more cameras. They rarely improve photos.

If camera quality matters a lot, watch sample videos and night photos from independent reviewers before you buy. This guide lists verified hardware; it does not run camera tests.
